Lot’s Choice

Genesis 13:5-13

consider the cause, the course, and the curse of lot’s choice

1. The Cause

-The chief element in determining his place in life was worldly advantage (Greed)

– A want of generosity/selfishness

– Disregard of religious privileges

He disregarded all Abraham had taught him.

His aim in life was not to please God, but to satisfy his own personal, selfish, and sinful desires.

He knew that God guided and protected Abraham, yet he did not consider God in his life.

No time for worship.

Had his heart been on fire for God, he would not have ventured among the Sodomites

2. The Course

Downward spiritually and morally- gradual

– lifted up his eyes and recognized which was before him

– “He chose” – That which was attractive

– “pitched his tent toward Sodom” – deeper and deeper in sin, toward destruction

3. The Curse

– He lost his friend Abraham, and what a friend, who is called the “Friend of God”

– Lost his wealth – it was consumed in Sodom; He was glad to escape with his life

– He lost his influence with his neighbors and family. 

– He lost the presence of God; only two of the three men who visited Abraham came to Lot.

– He lost his wife

– He lost his honor, because the father of his own grandchildren (Genesis 19: 31-36)

Conclusion: We notice four things

– The importance of choosing the right work, the right place, the right cmpanions.

– The importance of a personal knowledge of God

Lot’s religion was secondhand 

Abraham followed God; Lot followed Abraham

– The best way to get rich is by yielding all 

– The mercy of God to save wayward, ungodly Lot is the same for you and me 

He saved Lot – He will save you
